incoming: summer dishes

Mei Mei will soon be introducing one of Singapore’s national and most popular dishes: the legendary chilli crab. Inspired by Chef Liz’s go-to crab spot back home, Mei Mei’s version channels the bold flavors of Alexandra Village's hawker scene—right into the heart of London. Served with fried mantou buns, the dish offers brown Cornish crab drenched in a rich, spicy chilli sauce. Order a half or whole crab, roll up your sleeves and dive into the flavors of Southeast Asia.

“Other than being one of Singapore’s national dishes, I think that Singapore Chilli crab embodies what I love about Singaporean food and cooking and eating. It’s really interactive and fun, and you’re having a laugh if you’re cracking shells and you get to eat it…You’re really connecting with your food.”

Also hitting the menu this month: our BBQ chicken satays, a love letter to the smoky, bustling stalls of Lau Pa Sat. The chicken is marinated for a full 48 hours in a heady mix of lemongrass, galangal, chilli, garlic, and our signature spice blend, then brushed with sweet soy sauce and grilled over British charcoal. It’s served with a spicy peanut sauce, perfectly complementing the satay's spicy flavors. Pair the dish with some refreshing calamansi lime juice or sip on a warm, comforting kopi as you stroll through the market.

The idea for these iconic dishes came several years ago, when the lockdown transformed Mei Mei into one of Singapore’s hawker fares, or open-air street food markets.

“It was so much fun in such a dark time. We put Singaporean chilli crab on the menu, and I’ve never seen so many people excited for chilli crab before.”

Both of the dishes that were on the lockdown menu will be making a comeback within the next couple months. While the chilli crab is incredibly messy to eat, Mei Mei plans to provide bibs and gloves to protect customers’ clothing and provide an authentic and fun experience.

On the other hand, satays are a go-to street food option and recommended for most people, as it fits a milder palette.

Keep an eye out for these new summer dishes later this month. They will only be around for a limited time, so don’t miss out!
